When I Want to Spiral

My favorite infrequent masochistic pastime is sometimes a mid-day affair, a mid-night affair, whenever the curiosity bites.

I think about a website or news source I've been enjoying, and then go to Wikipedia and find out the company it is a subsidiary of. Rarely do I like the answer. And I am now enough of an adult to have witnessed this numerous times. Bloomberg blob-tagged (bought) CityLab, which I used to love...Vox Media gobbled up New York Magazine which is the vessel for Vulture which acquired Splitsider (which I remember enthusiastically following since its launch), which was a part of the Awl just like my beloved Wirecutter, recently folded into the New York Times.

I find things I love ultimately owned by IAC or Disney, some venture capital fund, Verizon, or whatever I just want to close up my computer for ever.

And yet, for each one of the above examples I feel like there is a Brick House Cooperative, Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, a The City.

If you love an independent news or arts organization, please send it my way ◡̈
